Unpaid nurses and midwives protest over 10-month salary arrears

The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives staged a demonstration on Thursday, October 2, 2025, demanding the government settle months of salary arrears.

The group says more than 7,000 nurses and midwives, though officially recruited through government channels, have gone without pay for the past nine to ten months.

The protest began at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park, with plans for marchers to present petitions at the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Health, urging swift action to resolve the issue.

Convenor Stephen Kwadwo Takyiah voiced frustration, describing the situation as unjust and unsustainable. He explained that the nurses and midwives graduated in 2020, completed their mandatory rotations, and waited three years before receiving official postings in late 2024.

Out of about 15,000 recruited, roughly 13,000 reported to work. However, by April 2025, only some began receiving salaries. To date, just over 6,500 have been paid, leaving nearly 7,000 unpaid despite working for almost 10 months.

The coalition warned that the government’s delay is demoralising health professionals and undermining effective healthcare delivery across the country.
