HOPin Academy, a community-based organisation in Tamale, has handed over modern toilet facilities to the Kumbungu Health Centre, the Kumbungu Senior High School, and some market traders, to help improve sanitation and curb open defecation in the area.

The facilities included modern, hygienic toilets equipped with handwashing stations, polytanks, and safe water points, designed to address critical sanitation challenges and improve health outcomes for patients, healthcare workers, students, and the wider Kumbungu community.

The project, funded by the Grundfos Foundation, sought to promote good hygiene and environmental health within schools and health institutions in the Kumbungu District.

Mr MacCarthy Mac-Gbathy, Founder and Executive Director of HOPin Academy, in handing over the facility to the beneficiary institution, said the initiative formed part of the organisation’s broader Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme aimed at building healthier and more resilient communities.

He said: “Our work stems from a deep belief that access to basic sanitation is not just a necessity but a fundamental human right that underpins health, dignity, and progress.”

He said with the support of the Grundfos Foundation, local stakeholders and partners such as Fix That Pump, and HOPin Academy had worked tirelessly over the past year to bring the project to fruition.

Mr Mac-Gbathy said: “By providing these facilities, we are not only addressing immediate health concerns but also investing in the future of our youth, mothers, and children as well as strengthening the resilience of our healthcare system.”

Mr Leon Roland Elongue Akame, Global Business Acceleration Lead at Grundfos Foundation, reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to accelerating sustainable development initiatives in underserved communities.

Mr Peter Adda, Kumbungu District Environmental Health Officer, commended HOPin Academy and Grundfos Foundation for their contributions towards improving sanitation in educational and health institutions.

He appealed for similar projects to be extended to other communities and schools to ensure that children and residents had access to decent places of convenience.

He also urged landlords to construct household toilets to reduce open defecation and promote public health.

Mr Simon Agongo, Assistant Headmaster of Kumbungu Senior High School, expressed gratitude to the benefactors describing the initiative as timely and impactful.

Madam Moro Jutta, Head, Kumbungu Sub-District Health Centre, said the project would help ease the burden on patients, who previously struggled to have decent places of convenience due to the lack of adequate sanitation facilities.
