The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Adams, has assured the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament that Ghana’s long-delayed National Sports Policy will be completed and formally adopted before the end of the first quarter of 2026.
The policy seeks to establish a comprehensive framework for the development, management, and promotion of sports and recreation nationwide.
Appearing before the PAC on Tuesday, Mr. Adams explained that the delay in finalizing the document stemmed from the ongoing realignment within the Ministry to include recreation as a key component of its operations.
“The only reason the policy remains in draft form is due to the restructuring at the Ministry. Recreation has now become a major consideration, and we need to reflect that properly in the policy,” he said.
He assured the Committee that the Ministry was incorporating all new directives and structural adjustments into the final draft, adding that the process was nearing completion.
“I can assure you that before the end of the first quarter next year, the policy will be finalized and no longer in draft form,” Mr. Adams affirmed.
The new National Sports Policy is expected to play a pivotal role in transforming Ghana’s sports sector by providing clear guidelines for sustainable development and management.
Mr. Adams further disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama had directed the establishment of a School Sports Agency to oversee the development of sports at the basic and secondary school levels across the country.
“The President has instructed that a School Sports Agency be created to take charge of school sports, so it doesn’t remain solely under the Ghana Education Service, where it sometimes suffers neglect due to lack of time or funding,” the Minister added.
