The family of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, has announced that her final funeral rites will take place on Friday, November 28, at the Black Star Square in Accra.
Speaking at a press conference, Oheneba Kwesi Abayie—Otumfuo Osei Tutu’s Akomfuohene and family spokesperson—said the ceremony, which begins at 6:00 a.m., will serve as the only funeral event for the late stateswoman. He emphasised that no additional funeral services would be held beyond the state ceremony.
He noted that the cortege will arrive at Independence Square at the start of proceedings, and assured the public that adequate security and protocol arrangements have been made to guide mourners throughout the event. The family expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for their support and sympathy since her passing, urging attendees to arrive early and strictly observe security directives to ensure a smooth and orderly ceremony.
The family will observe the official mourning in black and expects invited guests and the general public to comply with protocol instructions. According to Nana Abayie, the state funeral will honour Nana Konadu’s national significance and decades-long contributions to Ghana’s political and social development.
Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, widow of former President Jerry John Rawlings, passed away on October 23, 2025, in Accra. A major political figure and advocate for women’s rights, she founded the National Democratic Party (NDP) and played a pivotal role in establishing the 31st December Women’s Movement, which worked to advance women’s welfare and economic empowerment.
She served as First Lady from 1982 to 2001 and remained one of Ghana’s most influential women for over 40 years. In 2016, she contested the presidential election as the NDP’s flagbearer, becoming one of the few Ghanaian women to lead a political party into a national poll.
