Ghana commemorated World AIDS Day 2025 against the backdrop of troubling new statistics indicating that more than 334,700 people nationwide are living with HIV. In 2024 alone, the country recorded over 15,200 new infections and 12,600 AIDS-related deaths, highlighting the persistent threat the disease poses to public health.

In a statement issued on Monday, 1 December, the government described the occasion as a moment for reflection, solidarity, and renewed national commitment toward achieving an AIDS-free Ghana.

The global theme for this year, “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,” calls for strengthening health systems to withstand shocks and maintain essential services. Ghana’s national sub-theme, “Africa Unites Against AIDS,” reinforces the importance of regional collaboration and shared responsibility in safeguarding public health.

Amid shrinking external donor funding, the government outlined key steps to sustain HIV services. In February 2025, the President instructed the Ministry of Finance to secure funding for essential HIV interventions. Cabinet has also approved an updated National Workplace HIV and Wellness Policy to enhance prevention, combat stigma, and protect employees. Additionally, a National HIV Response Sustainability Roadmap has been introduced to scale up domestic financing, broaden access to prevention and treatment, and reinforce long-term system resilience.

The statement highlighted the vital contribution of the private sector, stressing that HIV continues to affect productivity and economic development. Companies are encouraged to strengthen workplace HIV programmes, support awareness initiatives, and adopt protective policies for their workforce.

The government further applauded the efforts of public institutions, private organisations, and civil society partners, urging Ghanaians to embrace self-testing, seek timely treatment, and actively resist stigma and discrimination.
