Chief Operating Officer of Multimedia Group Limited, Ken Ansah, and veteran broadcaster Sampson Lardi Ayenini were among the distinguished personalities honoured at the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Press Freedom Awards held last Saturday.

The two media figures were recognised for their outstanding contributions to press freedom and media development in Ghana as part of activities marking this year’s International Press Freedom Day.

The awards ceremony brought together government officials, media executives, civil society leaders, journalists, and other stakeholders to celebrate individuals and institutions whose work has strengthened Ghana’s media landscape and democratic governance.

Addressing the gathering, GJA President, Albert Dwumfuor, said the awards seek to recognise journalists and organisations that have demonstrated courage, professionalism, and a strong commitment to defending freedom of expression and promoting accountability.

Sampson Lardi Ayenini, host of the flagship current affairs programme Newsfile on JoyNews, was honoured for his contribution to journalism and public discourse. Over the years, the programme has become one of Ghana’s leading platforms for in-depth analysis of national issues, governance, law, and public policy.

Ken Ansah was also recognised for his significant role in advancing media excellence and supporting the growth of independent journalism through his leadership within Multimedia Group Limited.

In addition to the two awardees, the GJA honoured several media houses and journalists for their contributions to the development of the profession. The Association also paid tribute to posthumous honourees whose work helped advance press freedom and media professionalism in Ghana.

In his remarks, Mr. Dwumfuor reaffirmed the GJA’s commitment to protecting journalists from attacks, promoting ethical journalism, and advocating for a media environment free from intimidation and censorship.

He urged media practitioners to remain committed to accuracy, fairness, and the public interest, particularly in an era characterised by misinformation and increasing political polarisation.

The Press Freedom Awards form part of the GJA’s annual activities commemorating International Press Freedom Day, observed globally on May 3 to highlight the importance of a free and independent press and to remind governments of their responsibility to protect freedom of expression.
