Accra Mayor Bans Hawking Under Kwame Nkrumah Interchange

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has ordered a strict ban on hawking, trading, and all unauthorised activities under the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, warning that offenders will face prosecution.

He issued the directive during a working visit with officials from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), where they cleared food vendors, beggars, and individuals sheltering under the Korle Klottey section of the interchange as part of an inspection tour of the Okaikoi South Sub-Metropolitan District.

The visit focused on monitoring compliance with building regulations, sanitation standards, and AMA by-laws.

Mr. Allotey stated that the Assembly would no longer allow the use of the space beneath the interchange for commercial trading, sleeping, or any other unauthorised activities, stressing the need to keep the area clean, safe, and free of obstruction.

He warned that anyone caught engaging in illegal activities in the area would be dealt with according to law, adding that the enforcement exercise was part of broader efforts to restore order and improve sanitation in the capital.

The AMA team also demolished makeshift structures and cleared unauthorised settlements that had contributed to poor sanitation and posed safety risks to motorists and pedestrians.

Earlier in the visit, the Mayor led the task force to remove illegal wooden structures along the Otublohum Road near the Circle VVIP Station, describing them as contributors to congestion, environmental pollution, and obstruction of public spaces.

He cautioned that the Assembly would continue to take firm action against individuals who erect structures without approval.

Mr. Allotey further directed owners of drinking spots, transport operators at the VVIP Station, and cattle owners along Otublohum Road to desilt choked drains within 24 hours or face sanctions.

He reaffirmed the AMA’s commitment to enforcing sanitation regulations, building permit requirements, and public order by-laws, while urging residents and businesses to support efforts to make Accra cleaner, safer, and more organised.
