Tamale Girls SHS Appeals for Urgent Support to Address Infrastructure Challenges

The Headmistress of Tamale Girls Senior High School (SHS), Mrs Aisha Asumah, has appealed to the Ministry of Education for urgent support to address critical infrastructure and resource challenges facing the school.

Mrs Asumah said the school is grappling with inadequate classroom and dormitory facilities, insufficient furniture and beds, as well as ageing buildings that require immediate rehabilitation.

She identified leaking roofs, broken louvres, damaged mosquito nets, cracked walls and other structural defects as some of the challenges affecting students and staff.

According to her, the school urgently requires an 80-unit classroom block and a 30-unit dormitory block to address accommodation shortages and facilitate the transition to a single-track system.

She also called for improvements to the school’s drainage system and internal roads, as well as the provision of a pickup vehicle and a bus to support the safe transportation of students and staff and facilitate academic activities.

Mrs Asumah further appealed to the Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, to support the school’s upcoming 25th anniversary legacy project through the District Assemblies Common Fund or personal assistance.

The appeal was made during the commissioning of a refurbished Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory donated by HORLAP Company Limited, in partnership with Mr Iddrisu, who is also the Member of Parliament for Tamale South.

The upgraded ICT laboratory is expected to strengthen digital learning and equip students with skills in emerging areas including artificial intelligence, robotics, software development, cybersecurity and automation.

Mrs Asumah said the facility would provide students with improved access to technology and create a better environment for practical learning.

Chief Executive Officer of HORLAP, Kelvin Oduro Aboagye, stressed the growing importance of technology and urged students to become creators rather than merely consumers of digital products.

He encouraged the students to use the computers to learn coding, website and application development, artificial intelligence, robotics and cybersecurity, noting that such skills could be acquired while studying in Tamale.

The donation represents a public-private partnership aimed at strengthening digital education at the school.

School authorities are hopeful that the investment in the ICT laboratory will encourage government and development partners to provide additional support to address the school’s broader infrastructure and resource needs.
