The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey has directed the temporary closure of the Kaneshie footbridge after an inspection revealed significant structural defects. The move aims to prevent accidents and safeguard public safety while urgent rehabilitation works are planned.
A Channel One News visit showed deteriorating sections of the bridge, including cracked and broken concrete with exposed metal reinforcements, highlighting the need for immediate intervention.
Speaking to the media, the Mayor stated that initial repairs will be funded through the Assembly’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF), with additional support expected from the central government. He added that one side of the bridge will remain accessible to pedestrians while work begins.
Authorities have instructed all traders and occupants on and around the footbridge to vacate the area to allow engineers to carry out repairs without obstruction. The Mayor warned that anyone ignoring the closure or using the restricted sections could face legal action.
Frank Nkansah, Municipal Chief Executive for Ablekuma Central, attributed the deterioration partly to prolonged occupation by traders, which hindered regular maintenance, causing extensive damage to structural components, including barriers and footings.
James Oduro Amoo-Gottfried, Director of the Department of Urban Roads, confirmed the bridge’s poor condition and endorsed the partial closure, noting that temporary pedestrian crossing points along the median of the busy Dr. Busia Highway will be provided to ensure safe movement during the repair period.
