Africa Agriculture Science Week 2026 opens in Abuja with focus on resilient agrifood systems

The Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), in collaboration with the Government of Nigeria, has announced the 9th Africa Agriculture Science Week (AASW9), which will be held alongside the 10th FARA General Assembly from today, July 27 to 30, 2026, in Abuja, Nigeria.

Held every three years, Africa Agriculture Science Week is the continent’s premier platform for advancing agricultural science, technology, innovation and partnerships. The event brings together policymakers, researchers, farmers, agribusinesses, development partners, private sector leaders, youth and civil society organisations to exchange knowledge, showcase innovations and shape the future of Africa’s agrifood systems.

The 2026 edition is themed “Innovations and Partnerships for Resilient and Sustainable Agrifood Systems in Africa,” highlighting the importance of science, technology and collaboration in building productive, climate-resilient and inclusive food systems across the continent.

Discussions throughout the four-day event will focus on emerging agricultural technologies, climate-resilient farming systems, nutrition, urban food systems, and the policies, financing mechanisms and partnerships needed to scale agricultural innovation in Africa.

The programme will feature high-level plenary sessions, keynote addresses, ministerial dialogues, technical sessions, partner-led side events and an Innovation Marketplace, where participants will showcase cutting-edge agricultural technologies and solutions. Networking sessions and partnership-building opportunities will also be held, alongside a dedicated Nigeria Day, during which the host country will present its agricultural achievements, innovations and investment opportunities.

Running concurrently with the science week, the 10th FARA General Assembly will convene the organisation’s highest decision-making body to approve strategic priorities, strengthen governance and reinforce continental leadership in agricultural research and innovation.

The event is expected to attract a diverse range of stakeholders, including research institutions, universities, government agencies, farmer organisations, agribusinesses, investors, innovators, development partners, media and civil society organisations.

Organisers say the gathering aims to strengthen partnerships, promote investment, accelerate the adoption of scalable agricultural innovations and support Africa’s commitment to building resilient and sustainable agrifood systems.

As the continent continues to face challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, rapid urbanisation and changing market demands, AASW9 is expected to provide a platform for aligning science, policy, finance and partnerships around practical solutions that can drive agricultural transformation across Africa.

FARA has invited stakeholders, partners, innovators and investors from across the continent and beyond to participate in the landmark event and contribute to shaping the future of Africa’s agrifood systems.
