Ghana football legend and former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has announced the death of his father, George Gyan Baffour Mensah, paying tribute to the man he credits as a pillar of support throughout his life and football career.

Gyan shared the heartbreaking news in an emotional post on social media on Friday, expressing gratitude for his father’s unwavering love and support.

“I’m happy you saw my greatness, Da. Thank you for taking care of us. You will forever be in our hearts. R.I.P. (ASASE J).”

The heartfelt message prompted an outpouring of condolences from fans, former teammates, football administrators and well-wishers, who flooded social media with messages of sympathy and support for the former Black Stars captain and his family.

George Gyan Baffour Mensah was widely recognised as a key influence in Asamoah Gyan’s journey from a promising young footballer in Accra to becoming one of Africa’s most celebrated players. Although he largely remained out of the public eye, he was known to have provided constant encouragement throughout his son’s distinguished career.

Asamoah Gyan remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 international goals and is Africa’s highest-scoring player in FIFA World Cup history with six goals. Over a professional career spanning more than two decades, he played for clubs in Ghana, Italy, France, England, the United Arab Emirates, China, India and Turkey, while captaining the Black Stars at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and FIFA World Cups.

The former striker has often spoken about the central role his family has played in his success, making his tribute especially poignant. His message reflected both the grief of losing a parent and gratitude that his father lived to witness his remarkable achievements on the football field.

The Gyan family is expected to announce funeral arrangements in the coming days as tributes continue to pour in from across Ghana and the international football community.
