Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has donated GH¢50,000 to support the activities and operations of St. Jude Catholic Church at Weija in Accra.

The donation forms part of Dr Bawumia’s continued support for the church, having previously contributed to the construction of the church building and an eight-seater washroom facility fitted with disability-friendly features.

Dr Bawumia was honoured during a Holy Mass organised to recognise his contributions to the church. He also commissioned the newly completed washroom facility.

As part of his visit to the area, the NPP flagbearer toured the Weija Leprosarium, where he interacted with residents and patients and assured them of his continued support.

Presenting the GH¢50,000 donation after the ceremony, Dr Bawumia pledged to continue supporting the church and its activities.

He said his support was motivated by his admiration for Rev. Fr Andrew Campbell and the priest’s commitment to helping vulnerable people, including persons affected by leprosy, the poor, the sick and street children.

“Father Campbell is an extraordinary person. He’s a true man of God, and he cares about the poor, the needy, the hungry, the lepers, the street children, the sick, and this is something I also care deeply about,” Dr Bawumia said.

He recalled that when he learned about the construction of the church, he promised to assist with the resources needed to complete the project.

“I’m so happy to see the church today. It is very beautiful,” he added.

Reacting to the donation, Rev. Fr Andrew Campbell described Dr Bawumia’s support as evidence of his generosity and concern for vulnerable people.

He said Dr Bawumia had demonstrated empathy towards people in need, particularly those affected by leprosy.

According to Fr Campbell, during his visit to the leprosarium, Dr Bawumia interacted freely with the residents, shaking hands and embracing them.

“Dr Bawumia has that empathy towards needy and sick people. I’ve noticed it in the way he interacts when he comes and meets all those who had leprosy,” he said.

Fr Campbell added that Dr Bawumia’s actions reflected his love for humanity and his willingness to support people in difficult circumstances
