Chief Justice Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has sworn in 133 legal practitioners as Notaries Public, charging them to uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism and accountability in the performance of their duties.
The newly appointed Notaries Public include constitutional lawyer John Quayson and other senior members of the legal profession who have satisfied the requirements for appointment under Ghana’s Notaries Public Act, 1960 (Act 26).
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held in Accra on July 23, the Chief Justice reminded the appointees that the office of a Notary Public is founded on the principles of truth, diligence and professionalism.
He emphasised that their duties—including administering oaths, witnessing and authenticating signatures, certifying documents and validating legal instruments—must be carried out with fairness, humility and a strong commitment to justice.
“Every act performed by a Notary carries legal significance and must reflect the highest ethical standards,” Justice Baffoe-Bonnie stated.
GBA President Advises New Notaries
The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Mrs Afua Ghartey, described the appointment as an important achievement in the professional journeys of the newly sworn-in officers.
She referenced Section 1 of the Notaries Public Act, 1960 (Act 26), noting that the authority given to the Chief Justice to appoint Notaries Public highlights the significance of the office and the trust placed in those selected.
Mrs Ghartey encouraged the new Notaries Public to seek guidance from experienced practitioners while maintaining the core values of honesty, reliability, independence and professional excellence.
She also cautioned them against allowing personal relationships or external influences to affect their professional judgement, reminding them that every document they authenticate and every signature they witness carries legal consequences for individuals, businesses and institutions.
The ceremony marks an important addition to Ghana’s legal profession, with the new Notaries Public expected to support the administration of justice and ensure greater confidence in legal documentation and certification processes.
