Fifty-four persons living with disabilities (PWDs) in the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality of the Western Region have received support valued at over GH¢200,000 from the District Assembly Common Fund.

The support, which was presented as start-up assistance, is aimed at helping beneficiaries engage in income-generating activities to improve their livelihoods.

Speaking to Citi News during the handing-over ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Effia-Kwesimintsim, Abdul-Majeed Iddrisu Nassam Dokurgu, explained that the initiative forms part of the statutory allocation from the Common Fund meant specifically for persons with disabilities.

According to him, the items distributed were based on individual requests made by the beneficiaries to support their chosen economic ventures.

“Each beneficiary submitted specific requests which they believe will help them in their economic activities. Everything you see here — from refrigerators and provisions to cash support — is in line with what each person requested,” he said.

Mr. Dokurgu further disclosed that the Assembly is pursuing partnerships with Takoradi Technical University and the Takoradi Technical Institute to provide formal skills training for beneficiaries who wish to acquire vocational and technical skills.

“Going forward, we will be engaging in various collaborations with these institutions to explore how we can deliver training within the municipality,” he added.

The initiative forms part of efforts by the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly to empower persons with disabilities economically and promote inclusive development.
