Benjamin Quashie has announced that the first group of Ghanaians being evacuated from South Africa amid rising xenophobic tensions is expected to arrive in Accra on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
Speaking in an interview with DW Africa on Sunday, May 24, the High Commissioner said Ghanaian and South African authorities are currently conducting screening and verification processes to finalise the list of evacuees.
He explained that officials are working to ensure a smooth and coordinated departure, with the first group expected to include between 200 and 300 Ghanaians who have registered for evacuation due to safety concerns.
According to him, arrangements are being finalised for the first flight, which will transport about 300 passengers, with additional flights planned in the following days to evacuate more affected nationals.
He added that two more flights, each carrying about 300 passengers, are expected to follow to ensure that all registered Ghanaians who wish to return home are safely transported.
The evacuation exercise, which was initially scheduled to begin on May 21, was delayed due to the higher-than-expected number of people requesting to leave South Africa.
Authorities say the process is being carried out in collaboration with South African officials to ensure proper documentation, screening, and safe travel arrangements.
