John Dramani Mahama has launched Ghana’s first electronic visa (e-visa) service portal, introducing a fully digital system for visa application, payment, and approval.
The new platform, unveiled on Monday, May 25, 2026, allows travellers to apply for visas online without visiting embassies or consulates.
Under the new arrangement, all holders of African passports travelling to Ghana for business will now apply exclusively through the online system and will not be required to pay visa fees. The previous visa-on-arrival system has also been discontinued.
President Mahama said the reform is part of a broader vision to deepen African integration and strengthen ties with the diaspora, with a long-term goal of allowing people of African descent to travel to Ghana without visa fees.
Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak described the platform as a major administrative reform that removes bureaucratic delays and improves Ghana’s attractiveness for tourism and investment.
He added that the system improves efficiency while also strengthening national security through better screening processes, despite the increased openness.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also assured applicants that the new e-visa system will significantly reduce processing times, with decisions expected within 48 hours after submission of complete documents.
Authorities say the initiative positions Ghana as a more accessible destination for business, tourism, and international cooperation while modernising its immigration system.
