Young inmates from the Senior Correctional Centre in Accra have bowed out of this year’s Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners after losing to India in the quarterfinals.

The Ghanaian team, guided by David Acheampong, founder of the Mentors Chess Academy competed fiercely, displaying resilience and skill in a competition which featured 115 teams from 51 countries.

The championship was part of the International Chess Federation, FIDE’s Chess for Freedom initiative, which aimed at supporting rehabilitation and social inclusion through chess.

Ghana throughout their journey overcame Ukraine, Kenya, Romania, and Malawi to finish second in Group 2, just behind Serbia, a performance that marked an improvement over last year.

Mr. David Acheampong speaking in an interview with the GNA Sports called on corporate Ghana to help expand such initiative by introducing chess programs to Prisons across Ghana.

He said this would enable more inmates to benefit from the educational and social empowerment that chess provides.
