The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ghana has confirmed that government is engaging authorities in South Africa following reports of xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaians and other African nationals.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed that he has held discussions with his South African counterpart, Ronald Lamola, regarding viral videos depicting the incidents. The South African government has expressed sympathy for the victims and assured that thorough investigations will be conducted.
According to the Minister, South Africa will also convene a meeting with African ambassadors to address the situation and provide updates on actions being taken.
The Ministry further noted that it has been working closely with Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, to coordinate support for affected nationals. The main victim seen in one of the viral videos has been identified and is currently receiving consular assistance, and is reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities emphasised that no Ghanaian lives have been lost in the incidents so far and urged the public to remain calm while efforts continue to ensure the safety of citizens abroad.
The Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to protecting Ghanaians worldwide and called for unity across the continent, stressing that isolated acts of violence should not undermine the broader spirit of Pan-African solidarity.
