Ghana has been awarded the rights to host World Scrabble Championship, after edging out Thailand in the bidding process.

This would be the first time Ghana would be hosting the championship and the second time in West Africa.

This event would take place from November 7 to 16, 2025, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, Ghana.

The championship would comprise two main events, World Team Scrabble Championship (WTSC) and World English Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC).

The WTSC would bring together teams of five players from 16 countries, including the United States and Canada, to compete for national glory.

The WESPAC championship would feature over 600 participants from 30 countries, making it a truly global gathering of Scrabble enthusiasts.

In a media brief, the Scrabble Association of Ghana (SCAG), led by Captain Haruna Adamu expressed his excitement about the event, “We are thrilled to bring the world of Scrabble to Ghana, and we’re committed to making it a memorable experience for all participants”.

He said, “With its rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality, Ghana is poised to make the 2025 World Scrabble Championship an unforgettable experience for all participants”.

He emphasized that interactions with stakeholders, including the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority, have begun to ensure the event’s success.

He said, “this event would not only showcase Ghana’s hospitality but also provide a significant boost to our economy through tourism and infrastructure development.”

He added, “We’re expecting a significant influx of visitors, which would stimulate local businesses and create opportunities for economic growth”.

He said SCAG has planned various side events and activities to complement the championship, including a Last Chance Qualifier on November 11.

He added that the November 11 championship would be governed by internationally recognized rules, and a ratings system would be used to determine winners.
