The government has initiated a nationwide assessment of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) as part of plans to implement significant reforms.
The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, explained that the exercise is intended to identify and remove ineligible beneficiaries to ensure the programme reaches the most vulnerable groups.
Speaking to journalists in Parliament after appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), she indicated that the ongoing assessment would temporarily delay the disbursement of first-quarter payments by about two weeks.
She noted that the government is expanding the programme’s coverage from 350,000 to 400,000 households, which requires field enumeration and the updating of beneficiary data.
According to her, payments are expected to resume within the first two weeks once the documentation process is completed, stressing that the delay is not due to funding constraints but rather the need to ensure accurate records and proper targeting.
