The Government of Ghana has begun the repatriation of 327 Ghanaian nationals stranded in Port Bouët, a municipality in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, following a demolition exercise that left many residents displaced and deprived of their livelihoods.
In a statement issued on June 12, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the repatriation initiative was aimed at assisting affected Ghanaians who lost their homes, businesses, and sources of income as a result of the ongoing demolitions.
According to the Ministry, 228 of the affected nationals were successfully transported back to Ghana on Thursday, June 11, 2026, while arrangements were completed for the remaining returnees to travel home on Friday, June 12, bringing the total number of repatriated citizens to 327.
The Ministry explained that the affected individuals had been living in communities impacted by the demolition exercise and were left without adequate shelter or the financial means to remain in Côte d’Ivoire.
To support the exercise, the Government of Ghana provided buses and trucks to transport both the returnees and their personal belongings back to the country at no cost.
The statement further disclosed that authorities in Côte d’Ivoire have indicated their willingness to compensate victims affected by the demolition exercise. Ghanaian authorities are currently engaging their Ivorian counterparts to ensure that affected Ghanaian nationals receive the promised compensation.
Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan has been tasked with coordinating with relevant stakeholders and monitoring developments related to the compensation process.
The Ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaians living abroad and pledged continued support to facilitate the successful return and reintegration of those affected.
It also expressed appreciation to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire and all stakeholders involved for their cooperation in ensuring the smooth execution of the repatriation exercise.
The Ministry assured the public that it would continue to provide updates on the situation as developments unfold.
