Hubtel, Ghana’s leading payment service provider, has named Patience Akyianu as the new Chair of its Board of Directors. She takes over from Hans Nilsson, who is stepping down after a decade of steering the company through major governance reforms and significant growth.

Hans, who joined the board in 2015, oversaw transformative changes including the formalisation of board committees, alignment of governance structures with Bank of Ghana regulations, and strengthened supervisory systems. His leadership also guided Hubtel to achieve the long-term revenue target set in 2015 and complete independent assessments that positioned the company for potential public-market readiness. He is widely recognised for fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making and building confidence in Hubtel’s people and processes.

Patience Akyianu brings strong financial and corporate leadership expertise from her extensive career in banking and insurance. She previously served as Managing Director of Barclays Bank Ghana (now Absa), Chief Financial Officer for Standard Chartered’s Africa Region in Johannesburg, and as an Independent Non-Executive Director at Ecobank Ghana.

Since joining Hubtel’s Board in 2021, she has played a key role in strengthening governance and providing strategic direction. Her deep experience in finance, risk management and regulatory compliance positions her to lead the board effectively as Hubtel expands its influence in Ghana’s payments and digital commerce space.

Hubtel, licensed by the Bank of Ghana as an Enhanced Payment Service Provider, connects consumers to everyday essentials from businesses of all sizes. Established in 2005, the company operates 23 offices across Ghana with a staff of about 700. It aims to help advance Africa by making it easy for people to find and pay for what they need, with a vision of becoming the continent’s most useful company.

Hubtel’s rapid growth has earned international recognition, including being named Ghana’s fastest-growing company in 2022 by the Financial Times, with additional features by Amazon Web Services and Forbes for its role in Africa’s digital economy.
