ICGC Ashanti Churches Hold ‘Life Walk’ to Promote Mental Health Awareness

Branches of the International Central Gospel Church in the Ashanti Region have once again demonstrated their commitment to community well-being by organising a 12-kilometre mental health awareness walk, dubbed Life Walk.

The annual initiative, conceived by the church’s General Overseer, Dr Mensa Otabil, combines physical activity with social impact, raising funds to support mental health programmes while encouraging healthy lifestyles among members.

Participants from various congregations across the region gathered in Kumasi, walking together in a show of unity and purpose while engaging in conversations and advocacy around mental health.

Ashanti Regional Overseer, Rev Sylvanus Sowah-Odotei, stressed the importance of the initiative, noting that mental health issues are often overlooked despite their significant impact on individuals and communities. He described the walk as both a call to action and a demonstration of compassion for those facing mental health challenges.

Funds raised from the event will support awareness campaigns, counselling services, and health facilities that provide care for people with mental health conditions. Organisers say the initiative aims to bridge the gap between faith and healthcare by offering both spiritual encouragement and practical support.

The event also highlighted the role of faith-based organisations in addressing stigma and promoting openness around mental health in Ghana, where access to mental health resources remains limited.

Chairman of the planning committee, Rev Ralpheal Owusu Antwi, expressed optimism about expanding the initiative, emphasising the need for collective action to prioritise mental health and promote healing and hope within communities.
