    International Museum Day: Some museums in Ghana

    The International Museum Day, which is coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), is held annually on May 18. The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion’.

    GhanaWeb has listed some museums in the country which showcase the country’s past, from the pre-colonial days to the present.

    W.E.B. DuBois Centre

    The W.E.B. DuBois Centre is was set up to commemorate the late W.E.B DuBois and encourage Pan-Africans to reflect on his work.

    The centre, which was established in 1985 by the Ghanaian government, consists of a museum which contains memorabilia and the personal library of W.E.B. DuBois.

    Accra Arts Centre

    The Accra Arts Centre is one of the country’s great cultural centres. The centre exhibit’s the country’s woven kente cloths, wooden sculptures, leather bags, earrings, bead works and other good handicrafts.

    It is situated near the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

    The Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Memorial Park

    The Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and memorial park was built in honour of Ghana’s first president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1992.

    It houses the bodies of the late Dr. Nkrumah, his wife and some of his properties while he was alive.

    Some of his properties like his car, office desk, chair, pens he used are on display at the mausoleum.

    Museum for Science and Technology

    The Museum of Science and Technology located on the Liberia Road in Accra was established in 1965 to exhibit objects related to the history of development of Science and Technology in the country.

    The museum is governed by the National Commission on Culture and the Ghana Museums and Monuments board.

    Manhyia Palace Museum

    The Manhyia Palace Museum was established in 1925. The museum exhibits the culture of the Ashanti Kingdom; their kings, queens and the riches of their history, and Ghana’s cultural legacy.
