The Tech4YOUth training program had its maiden edition officially on its wheels in October 2024 as part of Joy Aid Foundation’s (JAF) Youth & Technology Project.

JAF was established in 2017, as a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting sustainable and inclusive development. We empower disadvantaged individuals and communities through quality training in leadership, environmental care, and skill development among the youth and women.

Our mission is to alleviate poverty, bridge the digital divide, and create opportunities for youth through innovative and practical solutions.

    Project Overview and Goals
The Tech4YOUth training program was developed to inspire and equip the youth with essential knowledge in robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and technology career pathways. The maiden program comprised 3 workshops and engaged up to fifty-eight (58) students from Junior High School (JHS) levels 1 to 3 at Atomic Hills Estate Demonstration School, at Kwabenya. Our primary goals include:

    • Introducing foundational ICT and digital skills to underserved youth.
    • Promoting creativity, innovation, and critical thinking through STEM education.
    • Training teachers to integrate digital tools into their teaching methods using the Training of Trainers (ToT) model, ensuring long-term sustainability.
    • Bridging the digital divide and nurturing interest in technology-focused careers.

“Empowering young kids with digital skills will remain our focal point of view to ensure an even distribution of digital knowledge and skills such as computer knowledge, online safety, coding (to enhance software and game development) and Green technology. – Joy Agyepong (Co-founder & QA, Team Lead)

    Our Partners
The success of the Tech4YOUth program was made possible through a meaningful partnership with the Goethe-Institut Ghana and JuldTech Group. Their support played a crucial role in delivering interactive and impactful workshops. Together, we aimed to make technology education accessible, engaging, and sustainable for underserved schools.

    Perspectives from Trainers
The trainers emphasized the transformative potential of the program. Our facilitators noted the students’ enthusiasm and curiosity as key highlights of the sessions. They observed significant growth in students’ understanding of AI and robotics, as well as their ability to grasp complex concepts through hands-on demonstrations. One trainer remarked:

“The students’ excitement and active participation showed their readiness to explore the world of robotics and AI. With more practical sessions, I believe they will develop the confidence to create and innovate”.- Facilitator

The inclusion of the school’s ICT teacher through the ToT model was also applauded as a vital step toward program sustainability. Trainers expressed hope that the knowledge imparted would continue to benefit students long after the workshops.

    Expectations of Students
The Tech4YOUth program ignited a newfound passion for technology among participants. Students expressed their excitement about exploring careers in robotics, AI, and other tech-related fields. For many, the sessions demystified technology, helping them understand its real-world applications. They expressed expectations for continued access to tools, resources, and mentorship to deepen their knowledge and skills.

“I look forward to implementing the knowledge gained to create robots that will produce solutions in our society” – JHS Student Participant

    Looking Ahead
The Tech4YOUth program represents the first step toward bridging the technology gap in underserved schools. With continued partnerships, we aim to scale this initiative to other public schools across Ghana, ensuring that every student, regardless of background, has the opportunity to thrive in a technology-driven world.

Joy Aid Foundation remains committed to empowering youth through digital education and fostering a future where innovation and opportunity are accessible to all.
