President John Dramani Mahama has donated engineering equipment and supplies to the Jamaican Defence Force to support ongoing recovery and reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Melissa.

The items were presented on the President’s behalf to Jamaica’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, during a visit by a Ghanaian delegation led by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on Sunday, January 25, 2026.

According to a statement shared by the Ghana Armed Forces on Monday, January 26, the visit allowed the delegation to assess the progress of reconstruction works, receive briefings on operations, and check on the welfare of Ghanaian troops serving as part of the multinational humanitarian mission in Jamaica.

As part of the visit, the delegation toured several project sites where Ghanaian engineers are rebuilding and rehabilitating homes for communities affected by the hurricane. The projects form part of wider humanitarian efforts aimed at restoring livelihoods and normalcy in the impacted areas.

Both the Ghanaian and Jamaican Foreign Ministers commended the deployed teams for their professionalism and dedication, noting that the joint effort between Ghana, Jamaica, and Guyana reflects strong regional solidarity and a shared commitment to humanitarian support.

The Commander of the Ghana Engineering Reconstruction Team, Colonel Emmanuel Asia, later briefed the delegation on the progress made so far, the challenges being faced, and plans for the final phase of the reconstruction work.

The delegation also included the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi; the Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu; and Ghana’s Special Envoy to the Caribbean Region, Kwasi Kyei Darkwah.
