JoyNews, in collaboration with IMANI Africa, is holding a national dialogue on plastic waste management in Ghana, with a focus on the sustainability and implementation of the country’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework.
The dialogue has brought together key stakeholders, including experts from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), policymakers, representatives of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and other industry players.
The stakeholders are examining the challenges confronting plastic waste management in Ghana and exploring practical and sustainable solutions to the growing problem.
A major focus of the discussions is the implementation and long-term sustainability of the Extended Producer Responsibility system, which places greater responsibility on producers and importers to manage the environmental impact of their products and packaging throughout their lifecycle.
The dialogue is also providing a platform for stakeholders to assess existing policies, identify gaps in implementation and consider measures to strengthen Ghana’s plastic waste management systems.
Participants are expected to deliberate on how government, industry and other stakeholders can work together to improve waste collection, recycling and responsible production and consumption.
The engagement forms part of broader efforts to promote sustainable approaches to plastic waste management and ensure that the EPR framework delivers meaningful environmental outcomes.
The discussions are expected to generate recommendations that could help strengthen policy implementation and encourage greater accountability among producers, importers and other actors across the plastics value chain.
