Daniel-Kofi Kyereh joins VfL Osnabrück on free transfer

Ghana international Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has completed a move to German second-tier side VfL Osnabrück on a free transfer, with the club officially confirming the signing of the experienced attacking midfielder.

The 30-year-old joins Osnabrück as he looks to rebuild his career following a difficult period marked by a serious knee injury that kept him out of competitive football for an extended period.

Kyereh will reunite with head coach Timo Schultz, who previously worked with the Ghanaian during their successful spell together at FC St. Pauli.

Under Schultz, Kyereh enjoyed one of the most productive periods of his career. During his two seasons at St. Pauli, he made 62 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga, scoring 21 goals and providing 20 assists.

His standout campaign came in the 2021/22 season, when he recorded 12 goals and 10 assists as St. Pauli mounted a strong challenge for promotion to the Bundesliga.

His impressive performances earned him a move to Bundesliga club SC Freiburg in the summer of 2022 for a multi-million-euro fee.

Kyereh also featured for Freiburg in the UEFA Europa League before suffering a cruciate ligament injury in February 2023.

The injury triggered a lengthy rehabilitation process, with several setbacks delaying his return to competitive football. He eventually made his comeback this year, featuring seven times for Freiburg’s reserve side in the Regionalliga.

Osnabrück had closely monitored his recovery, with the club’s Head of Performance, Sebastian Schwermann, following Kyereh’s physical development and fitness levels.

The club believes the Ghanaian can gradually regain full fitness and become an important player for the team. Kyereh will wear the number seven shirt at the Bremer Brücke.

Osnabrück technical director Daniel Latkowski praised Kyereh’s ability to score and create goals, while highlighting his technical quality and football intelligence.

Head coach Schultz is also confident that Kyereh can rediscover his best form.

“From our collaboration, I know what special qualities Kofi possesses as a footballer and as a person. He was an absolute game-changer at St. Pauli,” Schultz said.

Kyereh acknowledged the difficulties he has faced in recent years but said he remained confident of returning to competitive football.

“The past few years have been a very difficult time for me. But I never lost faith in my ability to return to the pitch,” he said.

Born in Accra and raised in Braunschweig, Kyereh came through the youth ranks of Eintracht Braunschweig and VfL Wolfsburg before making his senior breakthrough at TSV Havelse.

He later joined SV Wehen Wiesbaden, where he enjoyed a prolific 2018/19 campaign, scoring 15 goals and providing five assists in the 3. Liga.

He also scored in both promotion play-off matches against FC Ingolstadt as Wehen Wiesbaden secured promotion to the 2. Bundesliga.

Kyereh continued to establish himself in Germany’s second tier before joining St. Pauli in 2020 and later Freiburg in 2022.

Overall, he has recorded 27 goals and 27 assists in 91 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga.

At international level, Kyereh has earned 18 caps for Ghana and was part of the Black Stars squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, featuring in all three group-stage matches.

His move to Osnabrück offers Kyereh a fresh opportunity to overcome the setbacks of recent years and rediscover the form that once made him one of the most exciting attacking players in German football.
