Ghanaian rapper Kwaw Kese has revealed plans to refund public donations raised for fellow musician Kwesi Arthur.
A few weeks ago, Kwaw Kese created a GoFundMe account for Kwesi Arthur after the rapper posted on social media claiming that his former management was taking $150,000 from him for using his own images. Kwesi Arthur, however, asked the public to disregard the fundraiser, stating he had no knowledge of it.
Speaking on Hitz FM’s morning show Daybreak Hitz, Kwaw Kese expressed disappointment over Kwesi’s reaction. He explained that, given the large followings both artists have, he thought he could use the platform to help Kwesi pay off his debt to his former management company, Ground Up Chale.
“I set up the GoFundMe account and if it was a bad thing I wouldn’t even talk about it. I came online and posted the account asking people to support our brother so that Kwesi Arthur can have his freedom,” he said.
Kwaw Kese emphasized that he never intended to keep the donations. “I was doing it strictly for Kwesi Arthur. I was pained that someone could own his images and demand $150,000. You are bigger than that amount of money. Let’s pay the guy off so you can be free,” he added.
He revealed that the fundraiser had raised $170 and said he had decided to ask GoFundMe to refund the contributions. “The $170 is still in the account. They have given me a deadline to withdraw it or they refund the donors,” he said, adding that the backlash surrounding the campaign influenced his decision.
