Mahama Presents Replacement Vehicles to Retired Military Chiefs After Withdrawal of Armoured Cars

President John Dramani Mahama has fulfilled his pledge to provide replacement vehicles to the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Thomas Oppong-Peprah (Rtd), and former Service Commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) following the withdrawal of armoured vehicles that had been allocated to them as part of their retirement package.

According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the retired military leaders received Toyota Land Cruisers on behalf of the President during a ceremony held at the General Headquarters in Accra on Friday, July 31, 2026. The vehicles were presented by the current Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong.

In a Facebook post on Monday, August 3, the GAF said the presentation fulfilled President Mahama’s commitment to provide alternative vehicles after the earlier withdrawal of the armoured vehicles. The replacement, it noted, recognises the retired commanders’ years of dedicated service and contributions to Ghana’s national security.

During the ceremony, Lt. Gen. William Agyapong commended the former military leaders for their commitment and sacrifices in advancing the Ghana Armed Forces. He also outlined ongoing efforts to improve the military, including infrastructure development, personnel welfare initiatives and measures to strengthen the operational effectiveness of the GAF.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe (Rtd), thanked President Mahama for keeping his promise. He described the gesture as a clear sign of the government’s appreciation for the invaluable service of retired military personnel.

Air Marshal Bekoe also lauded the current military leadership for pursuing reforms and development programmes aimed at enhancing the welfare of personnel and boosting the operational capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces.
