Mr. and Mrs. Turkson are appealing to the public to financially come to the aid of their baby girl, Christabel to undergo successful brain surgery. Three-month-old Christabel was born and diagnosed with vein of Galen aneurysm with high flow leading to heart failure.
She is in need of GHS 59,000.00 for an initial staged embolization as soon as possible as her condition deteriorates with each passing day.
According to the couple, they have used up all their savings on their baby’s condition and are therefore calling on the benevolence of individuals and organizations to help raise the said amount.
Meanwhile, other members of the family have created a GoFundMe account to also support.
This will be the second time this procedure will be performed in Ghana.
ABOUT VEIN OF GALEN ANEURYSM
Vein of Galen aneurysm is a rare form of arteriovenous malformation in which the embryonic precursor of the vein to Galen, a vein at the base of the brain, dilates causing too much blood to rush to the heart. This can lead to rapid heart failure. Other features may include increased head circumference resulting from hydrocephalus, unusually prominent veins on the face and scalp, developmental delay, persistent headache, and other neurological findings (Mayo Clinic).
Vein of Galen is often recognized on an ultrasound late in pregnancy. In other cases, it is diagnosed after birth. Although the exact cause is unknown, this condition appears to result from a defect in early fetal development (Mayo Clinic).
