The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU) of the Trades Union Congress has issued a three-day ultimatum to BCM Ghana Limited to pay end-of-contract benefits owed to more than 700 former employees.
According to the union, the affected workers were laid off over ten months ago after their contracts expired but have yet to receive their full entitlements, despite clear provisions in their individual employment agreements.
On Tuesday, December 16, members of the union picketed at the premises of BCM Ghana Limited, demanding the immediate payment of the outstanding benefits, which they described as unfairly delayed.
The General Secretary of the GMWU, Abdul-Moomin Gbana, said the prolonged non-payment has caused serious financial hardship for the former workers and their families. He added that several attempts to engage the company’s management on the issue have produced no results.
Mr Gbana emphasized that the benefits are a rightful entitlement earned through years of service, not a favour from the company, warning that the union would escalate its actions if BCM Ghana fails to comply within the deadline.
He stated that the company has until Friday to settle every pesewa owed to the affected workers.
Some of the former employees also spoke to the media, describing their situation as distressing and emotionally exhausting, with some lamenting that colleagues have passed away while waiting for their benefits.
Efforts to reach BCM Ghana Limited for comment on the matter have so far been unsuccessful.
