President John Dramani Mahama has directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect following the tragic deaths of key state officials in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

Also confirmed dead were former Ashanti Regional Minister Samuel Sarpong, former Member of Parliament Samuel Aboagye, and Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The helicopter crew Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah also lost their lives in the crash.

“The President and government extend deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of our fallen comrades and service members who died serving the nation,” Chief of Staff Julius Debrah said. “All flags are to fly at half-mast until further notice.”

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) confirmed the helicopter went missing after departing Accra for Obuasi. Despite ongoing efforts, communication with the aircraft had not been re-established as of the statement.

Eyewitnesses at the crash site in Adansi Akrofuom, Ashanti Region, reported that the helicopter was engulfed in flames and severely burnt, with all passengers tragically killed.

The aircraft was carrying eight people three crew members and five passengers when it went off radar, according to the GAF.
