Professor Emmanuel K. Derbile, the Vice Chancellor, SDD University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS), has eulogised Dr Robert Amesiya, the foundation Medical Director of the Upper West Regional Hospital for creating a brand for himself in the health sector.

“There are many Roberts, and there probably are many Dr Roberts, but when you hear the people mention Dr Robert, it is a brand, it means Dr Robert Amesiya,” he stated.

The SDD-UBIDS VC eulogised Dr Amesiya, now the Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Services, during his send-off and honour ceremony organised by the Upper West Regional Hospital, to celebrate his impactful leadership and service at the facility.

In about two decades of service in the region, Dr Amesiya had served in various roles including a medical superintendent, orthopedic surgeon, a physician, and Acting District Director of Health Services before assuming the role as a Medical Director of the Regional Hospital in 2019.

Dr Amesiya served as the Medical Director for the Upper West Regional Hospital from 30th October 2019 to 14th April 2025. Prof. Derbile said, “We celebrate not simply because he played these roles, but how he handled them, and the impact he made on systems and lives,” explaining that Dr Robert’s name had now become a strong brand.

Many groups, associations and institutions in the region including staff of the Regional Hospital, some patients at the hospital, GCB Bank, Ghana Medical Association and the Regional Hospital among others presented gifts and citations to honour Dr Amesiya.

Prof. Derbile said the ceremony should inspire the next Medical Director, management, and staff of the hospital to achieve more, to further transform the facility to honour Dr Amesiya. Dr Amesiya, the celebrant, commended the hospital management and staff, political leadership, and traditional leadership in the region for the cooperation offered to him throughout his service.

He said the hospital started operating with all the state-of-the-art equipment but without seed capital, which led to the regimented leadership navigating through the challenges, to put the facility on its feet. “The very first day we began here, we didn’t even have a single pair of gloves, needle, syringe or a gallon of liquid soup to begin with. So, we had to take the bull by the horn,” he explained.

Mr Francis Luguniah, the Administrator of the Hospital, recounted some achievements of Dr Amesiya which included the facilitation of the introduction of dialysis, C. T. scan; ENT; endoscopy; audiology; radiology; Oncology; and Pathology services among others.

He said Dr Amesiya also started the hospital with four doctors and 214 staff in 2019 but had 40 doctors and 828 staff at the time of his departure. Talking about electricity consumption, which had been a major challenge to the hospital, Mr Luguniah said Dr Amesiya led the redesigning of the hospital in 2023 to reduce electricity consumption by 62 per cent.
