Major works on an eight-kilometre asphalt-overlay began in Sunyani on Tuesday, with the Central Business District (CBD), and parts of the Bono Regional experiencing heavy vehicular and human traffic.

During a visit to CBD around 1500 hours, the GNA noticed that it was hectic for the personnel of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to control the traffic, as work on the asphalt-overlay progressed steadily.

With the assistance of the Department of Urban Roads, supervisors of the government-funded project, the contractors opened only one of the dual-carriage roads at the CBD for the movement of vehicles, while contract workers asphalted the other lanes.

Some of the commercial drivers commended the government for addressing their concerns and reshaping the access roads in the capital, however, some of them told the GNA they were also worried about the growing traffic jam, obstructing driving.

Mr Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani East in an interview with the GNA expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, acknowledging the Vice President’s instrumental role in putting the Sunyani town roads into good shape.

He said work on the asphalt overlay of the Sunyani access roads was a testimony of what Alhaji Dr Bawumia, also Election 2024 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could do for the people of Sunyani, and urged the electorates to vote and retain the NPP in political power when they go to polls in the December 7, General Elections.

“These town roads have been the concern of the constituents. I have never rested until the work commences this morning. We are extremely grateful to the Vice President who promised to reshape the roads before December 7, have done so,” Mr Ameyaw-Cheremeh stated.

In a related interview, Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister, who was sighted around also expressed appreciation to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Vice President Alhaji Dr Bawumia for awarding the contract for the work commence.

She indicated that work on the asphalt-overlay and other access roads in the Sunyani Municipality had inspired the people, and maintained their trust and confidence in the NPP, saying with these and other projects, the votes of the NPP would double in the region.

Mad Owusu-Banahene called on the commercial drivers and petty traders along the stretch to cooperate with the contractors so that the work would be completed on time.

In another interview, Mrs Victoria Darkwa, the Bono Regional Director of the Department of Urban Roads told the GNA additional work on seven-kilometre asphalt-overlay would commence at Odomase, the capital of the Sunyani West Municipality.

Describing the Odomase access roads as another pressing need of the people, she said the two projects covered at least all the deplorable condition of the access roads in the Sunyani and Odomase Townships.
She said without the cooperation of the residents, it would be difficult for the contractors to execute the projects, and therefore called for cooperation from the residents and commercial drivers in putting the roads into good shape.
