Sudan stun Ghana to delay Black Stars’ AFCON 2021 qualification

Ghana’s qualification to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations has been delayed after they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Sudan in Omdurman on Tuesday.

Ghana needed a win away in Sudan to book a place in the continental showpiece with two games to spare. The black Stars went into the game with a perfect record, picking nine points from three games and scoring five without conceding.

However, the black stars could not maintain that perfect record and would have to wait for the next round of qualifiers to book their place in next year’s AFCON.

C.K Akonnor’s men lacked the creative drive throughout the game and hardly created anything, missing the touch and leadership of Andre Dede Ayew.

The game was heading to a draw until Mohamed Rahman found the back of the net in additional time to deny the black stars of an automatic qualification.

A win or draw would have been enough to secure qualification to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with two games to spare for the Black Stars but the team will now have to wait until the next round of qualifiers. The Black stars will play South Africa and Sao Tome & Principe in the next round of qualifiers.
