Member of Parliament for Adalku and Ranking Member on the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, Kwame Agbodza, has described government’s directive to suspend the award of new road maintenance contract as “unacceptable”.

He argues that road maintenance is too crucial to be handled the way government is going about it.

Mr. Agbodza said, “government’s decision not to commit to new project in terms of routine and periodic maintenance is unacceptable. One would have thought that considering the public outrage and heightened agitations as a result of deteriorating roads across the country, government would have committed more resources to road maintenance.”

The Adalku MP is of the view that government needs to prioritize its expenditure to be able to meet such crucial needs of road maintenance.

He further added that government in its revenue mobilization takes money in the name of roads and uses it for something else rather than to ad development.

Mr. Agbodza wants government to withdraw this threat immediately.

Government recently directed that the award of new road maintenance contract across the country be suspended until further notice. This was seen in a private mail sent from the Ministry of Roads and Highways to all Regional Directors of the Department of Urban Roads, instructing them to inform all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies of the directive.

The private mail read, “Management has been instructed not to award any periodic maintenance contract till further notice. You are therefore to take note and abide by this directive.”

The mail continued, “As a consequence, any payment certificate received for a new contract shall be returned immediately to its original source”.
