Trump to Become First Sitting US President to Sign Dollar Bills

Donald Trump is set to make history as the first sitting U.S. president to have his signature appear on American banknotes, following an announcement by the Treasury Department.

The move, which will see his signature printed alongside that of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, is part of activities marking the United States’ 250th anniversary. Traditionally, U.S. currency has only carried the signatures of treasury officials.

The first $100 notes bearing both signatures are expected to be printed in June, with other denominations to follow. Current notes feature the signatures of former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Treasurer Lynn Malerba.

Officials say the decision is intended to commemorate the country’s milestone anniversary, though it represents a departure from a long-standing practice dating back to 1861, where only the treasurer’s signature appears on banknotes.

Treasurer Brandon Beach stated that U.S. currency will continue to symbolize national strength and prosperity.

The announcement has drawn political reactions, with Gavin Newsom criticising the move and linking it to broader concerns about economic conditions.

The development is part of a wider effort by the administration to associate Trump’s name with national projects and commemorations. Earlier, a federal arts body approved a gold commemorative coin featuring his image as part of the 250th anniversary celebrations.
