The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) is demanding urgent security protection for multimedia journalist Erasmus Asare Donkor following threats by Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong to deal with him over his reports over the Ejura disturbances.

The MP is blaming the journalist for biased reportage and whipping up sentiments against government in the murder of social activist, Ibrahim Kaaka.

The multimedia group has reported the matter to the police as well as the Speaker of Parliament over the MP’s comment but the journalist has expressed concern and worry, especially given the MP’s history about threats, one of which resulted in the death of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

Speaking on live TV, Kennedy Agyapong said, ‘this boy should be beaten seriously. He’s so annoying. For giving you false report, he deserves to be beaten. If I were the president, I will get him beaten mercilessly. Is the media above the law? Someone has killed his brother and because of your false information, two people have lost their lives through protest. Joy FM should be ashamed of themselves.”

At a press briefing which took place today, the President for GJA has made it clear that “it will not be safe to gamble or toil with the threats made against the life of Erasmus Asare Donkor and urges the National Security Apparatus to take up this urgent issue with a lot of seriousness.”

The President also mentioned Honorable Kennedy Agyapong’s comments (similarly) towards Ahmed Suali after his role in the number 12 exposee, where he asked people around Madina to beat him up and that led to some brutality and murder, thus he is asking government, the Minister for Justice and the Attorney General to take this act seriously and set up some structures to protect the life of Erasmus Asare Donkor.
