Former finance minister, Dr. Kwesi Botchwey is reported to have died at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, on Saturday, November 19, 2022, where he was receiving medical care.
Dr. Kwesi Botchwey served as a finance minister during the military era of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) from 1982 to 1991 and during the constitutional period of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from 1992 to 1995.
He is the country’s longest-serving finance minister as he served in the office alongside Ghana’s longest-serving head of state, the late former president Jerry John Rawlings.
Prior to his demise, he was a key member of the Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress, having played an integral role in the evolution of the NDC, from its PNDC era.
Dr. Kwesi Botchwey was born on September 3, 1944. He received his secondary school education at Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School in Ghana. Dr. Botchwey holds an LL.B from the University of Ghana, a LL.M from Yale Law School, and doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School. He taught at the University of Zambia, the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and the University of Ghana.
