Ghana’s music community has been moved to collective mourning following the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong in the Bronx, New York. The young Ghanaian, who had moved to the United States about a year earlier to live with his father, was ambushed and shot while walking to school on the morning of October 29, 2026.
According to reports, Javits was heading to Dream Yard Preparatory School when he was attacked near East 171st Street and Crotona Place. He was shot once in the abdomen, managed to run a short distance, and later died at the hospital. Police are searching for three teenage suspects. His father has spoken of prior bullying at school and called for justice.
In the hours and days after the news broke, several of Ghana’s leading musicians used their Instagram Stories to express condolences, call for justice, and reflect on the loss.
Sarkodie shared a formal “Rest in Peace” tribute featuring a photo of Javits, noting that a young Ghanaian life had been taken too soon after he left home seeking a brighter future filled with dreams and opportunities. The post wished his soul perfect peace and strength plus justice for the family.
Stonebwoy posted under the bold headline “JUSTICE FOR JAVITS..”, highlighting that the 15-year-old from Ghana was fatally shot on his way to school in the Bronx and that his family is calling for justice.
Quamina MP reshared the same dignified tribute graphic that circulated widely, joining the wave of public mourning.
Joey B offered a more personal reflection. He noted that friends in the States often ask why he doesn’t simply move there given how frequently he travels. He spoke of the “serious God-given peace” he experiences in Ghana and observed that many parents only send their children abroad because of perceived opportunities. He closed simply with “Rip J. Frimpong.”
Twitch4eva wrote: “Rip J Frimpong. Sending love to his family and loved ones. Sad day ”
Kwesi Arthur added a poignant message: “No child should ever suffer like this. Rest in peace, Javits Frimpong. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. ”
These posts from some of Ghana’s biggest names reflect a broader sense of shared grief across the Ghanaian diaspora and at home. Artists who normally focus on music, lifestyle, and celebration paused to acknowledge a young life cut short and to stand with a grieving family.
The Ghanaian government has also responded, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveying condolences and stating it will work with U.S. authorities to pursue justice.
As investigations continue and the family seeks answers, the messages from Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Joey B, Kwesi Arthur, Quamina MP and others serve as a public expression of solidarity. They underscore a simple truth repeated across the tributes: no child should ever suffer like this.
Rest in peace, Javits Frimpong.
