Two schools have qualified for the grand finale of the Graphic Business Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC) Version 5.0 to be held in Accra.

They are the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

They will be joined by the winners of the third semi-final contest between defending champions, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and first-time finalists, Academic City University College (ACUC).

    Impact

The TBSC is a tertiary business schools quiz organised by the Graphic Communications Group Limited’s (GCGL) Graphic Business, in collaboration with the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), to encourage intellectual development among students in various tertiary institutions across the country.

As the country’s leading economic and financial newspaper, the Graphic Business believes that the challenge will serve as a fertile ground for nurturing students’ and small business owners’ interest in business issues and entrepreneurship in general.

It also provides the contestants with the opportunity to demonstrate their intellectual prowess which could earn their schools verified bragging rights.

    Semi finals

For this year’s contest, UEW, the first time it secured a place in the final, cruised past the country’s premier university, Unversity of Ghana (UG), with a whopping 75.3 points, while the latter secured 52.4 points after a very competitive five rounds contest.

UEW’s team, made up of Simon Ahlidza, James Nana Ofori and Fiadufe Success Defor, put up a spirited performance against Michael Mensah, Peter Emeka Ike and Derrick Kofi- Arthur Otoo, representing the UG.

The UEW trio appeared well prepared and determined to reach the finals again and hopefully win their first-ever TBSC title after reaching the finals four consecutive seasons, and particularly this year, having edged out the team from UG.

Supporters from the two universities who came in their numbers to encourage and motivate their teams, made the contest even more thrilling as they continuously bantered each other throughout the contest.

    UCC vs GCTU

In the second contest, first-time semi-finalists, GCTU, made up of Ransford Sampene, David Lamptey Junior and Abigail Tagoe, faced two-time champions, UCC, represented by Nana Yaw Dua, Fatawo Abubakar and Nkunu Godson.

The Central Regional heavyweights easily booked their place in the finals with 60.76 points over their fresh-off-the-boat contenders who got 27 points.

The Accra-based GCTU lagged behind the UCC throughout the contest with the exception of the fifth round (riddles) where both teams failed to secure any points.

The quizmaster, Alhassan Trawule, asked the students questions on business theories, word problems requiring calculations, business case of the day, questions pertaining to articles from the Graphic Business newspaper and riddles.

    Sponsors, support

The contest has been made possible with support from GLICO Life Insurance, MT Ghana, CompuGhana, PwC, GOIL Ghana, CalAsset and Mevities.

ICAG, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Graphic Business, Graphic Online, TV3 and Asaase Radio are providing technical support for the event, which has the theme: “Preparation Ahead of Opportunity: Business as a Way of Life.”
