As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), in collaboration with Euracare Advanced Diagnostics and Heart Centre, partnered The Mirror to organise a two-day breast and health screening event.

The first session, which began on Monday, October 2, 2023 was simultaneously held in Accra at the headquarters of the Graphic Communication Group Limited (GCGL) and the Graphic Clinic.

Participants included both male and female GCGL staff, as well as specialists and residents from neighbouring communities, including Adabraka.

The screening included blood pressure, blood sugar, height and weight measurement and Body Mass Index (BMI). Participants received counselling on the significance of early detection in the management of breast cancer.

A radiologist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Senyo Tasiame, who was also a consultant at the Graphic Clinic venue, touched on the importance of breast self-examination and the need to seek professional advice.

He explained that while symptoms such as bloody discharge from nipples, changes in breast colour, or breast pain may not necessarily indicate breast cancer, consulting a doctor for a comprehensive diagnosis was essential.

The Principal Nursing Officer from GAEC, Cecilia Agyekum, conducted the breast examination and explained that the screening aimed at educating people about breast care.

She stressed the importance of recognising signs of breast cancer or unusual changes and advised that a medical professional should be consulted if such changes were noticed.

Nana Yaa Ankrah, one of the participants, shared her experience, stating, “The doctors were very friendly, and I had the opportunity to ask questions about my breasts and learn more about the disease. Mo ay3 adi3,” to wit, good job done.
