The 2009 Reggae-Dancehall Artiste of the Year, Chizzy Wailer, believes Ghanaian reggae has a bright future and could win a Grammy awards for the country.

According to the veteran Ghanaian reggae artiste, the genre’s potential was yet to be fully realised, but he was impressed by the current crop of reggae/dancehall artistes.

In an interview with GNA Entertainment, Chizzy Wailer, National Organiser of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), stated that prodigies in the genre should have industry support to help them reach the international stage.

“The future of Ghanaian reggae and dancehall is bright irrespective of all the challenges. The genre possesses some powerful messages, and I think it has evolved over time, but I won’t say we are sleeping on it.

“More artistes can take us to the Grammys looking at what they are doing in the industry now. The likes of Rocky Dawuni have set the pace, and all they need is our support and not just praises but media, the industry to propel them to the Grammys.

“We need to invest in them because they have some unique style that would make Ghana well represented on the international stage,” he said.

Chizzy Wailer also pushed for more Ghanaian reggae and dancehall to be played on radio and television in order to rekindle people’s interest in the music, given its potent themes.
