Residents of AdakluKofe, a farming community in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region have appealed to the Kadjebi District Assembly and other organisations to provide them with safe, potable, and accessible water system for domestic use.

The community with a population of over 200 inhabitants depend on odour and contaminate water from a Stream which is six kilometers from the community for domestic use.

Mr. Peter Wemenyo, a former Assemblyman for Gyamonome Electoral Area and an elder of the community, who led the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to the water source, said the water often dried up leaving community members to buy sachet water for use.

He said the situation was also affecting the academic performance of the students in the community as they had to trek the six kilometers to the water source on daily basis to fetch water for bathing before embarking on another seven-kilometer journey to school at Gyamonome for Primary and Junior High School (JHS) education.

He said before they got to school, they would have been tired and exhausted so could not concentrate on studies, thus, affecting their academic work and performance.

Mr. Wemenyo said the health implications of the absence of water in the community could not be underestimated as residents developed diarrhea and rushes after using the water unboiled.

He said during the dry season those who tried using the muddy water applied potassium alum in purifying the water and described it as sorrowful and pathetic for the residents to be going through such an ordeal in this 21st century.

Mr. Wemenyo, therefore, appealed to benevolent organisations and NGOs to come to their aid by providing them with a mechanised water system.
