The Women’s Ministry of the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC), Takoradi, has organised a breast cancer screening and sensitisation exercise for its members as part of this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month celebration.

Mrs Sarah Agyemang, a Breast Cancer Specialist, who led the exercise, took them through risk factors, signs and symptoms, as well as preventive measures, emphasising on the importance of early detection.

She said breast cancer was the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in Ghana, however, with regular screenings and self-examinations, the rate could significantly reduce.

Mrs  Agyemang highlighted key risk factors for breast cancer, including family history, genetic mutations, age, dense breast tissue, radiation exposure and hormone replacement therapy.

On signs and symptoms, she urged the participants to see lumps or thickening in the breast or underarm, and change in breast size or shape as some of the signs of the disease.

Touching on preventive measures, Mrs Agyemang told them to do regular self and clinical breast examinations to help reduce the risk of contracting breast cancer.

“Having mammograms (bi-annually for women 40+ years), healthy lifestyle choices like balanced diet, exercise, minimal alcohol consumption, and avoiding harmful chemicals and pollutants are also some common preventive measures,” she added.

Mrs Judith McClain-Afful, Leader of the PIWC Women’s Ministry, expressed the ministry’s commitment to promoting breast  awareness among the public.

“We aim to educate our members and the community on the importance of breast cancer screening and early detection. We will continue to support initiatives that promote women’s health and well-being,” she stated.

Pastor Borngreat Selasi Amedeka, Resident Minister of PIWC, said the exercise was aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer and encouraging members to take proactive steps in maintaining their breast health.

He said by promoting breast cancer awareness, the church had demonstrated its dedication to the well-being of its members and the community.
