President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Saturday, January 4, 2025, commissioned the 250-bed Ashanti Regional Hospital and an adjacent 50-bed Infectious Disease Centre in Sewua, located in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region.

This modern healthcare facility aims to address critical healthcare gaps and ease pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ghana’s second-largest referral facility.

Key Features of the Ashanti Regional Hospital

The Ashanti Regional Hospital is now the third-largest healthcare facility in the region, following the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and the Afari Military Hospital. Fully equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, the hospital includes:

    • Administration block
    • Out-patients department
    • Physiotherapy unit
    • Gynaecology wards
    • Intensive care unit (ICU)
    • Maternity and delivery suites
    • Laboratory and pharmacy
    • Theatre complex
    • Laundry and sterilization facilities
    • A medical gas plant for producing medical gases

The accompanying 50-bed Infectious Disease Centre is one of 12 facilities nationwide built with COVID-19 funding to enhance the management of infectious diseases. Together, these facilities bolster healthcare delivery and contribute to universal health coverage in the region.

The hospital forms part of the Euroget hospital initiative launched in 2008 under former President John Agyekum Kufuor. Of the nine hospital projects envisioned, seven have now been completed under President Akufo-Addo’s administration. These include:

    • 500-bed Military Hospital at Afari
    • 160-bed Wa Regional Hospital
    • 250-bed Ashanti Regional Hospital in Sewua
    • 100-bed Ga East Municipal Hospital at Kwabenya
    • Five 60-bed hospitals in Tepa, Konongo, Twifo Praso, and Madina

At inauguration, President Akufo-Addo urged local leaders and residents to uphold strict maintenance practices to preserve the hospital’s infrastructure and equipment. The president also commissioned an additional Infectious Disease Centre at the Kumasi South Hospital in Chirapatre.
