Akufo-Addo pardons former Capital Bank CEO Ato Essien, ten others

President Nana Akufo-Addo has stirred controversy with a decision to grant presidential pardons to several individuals, including Ato Essien, the former CEO of Capital Bank.

Essien, convicted of financial crimes related to the bank’s collapse, was serving a 15-year prison sentence.

The pardon list, revealed in a letter from the Office of the President, includes a diverse group of individuals with varying offenses and circumstances.

Notably, it includes Beatrice Ofori, a 64-year-old woman convicted of human trafficking who suffers from serious health issues, and Akwasi Alhassan, who has been imprisoned for murder for over three decades.

The decision to grant clemency to Essien, along with individuals convicted of serious crimes such as murder and human trafficking, usually draw criticism from those who argue it undermines the rule of law. Critics question the criteria used for selecting these individuals for pardon and the potential impact on public trust in the justice system.

However, proponents of the pardons highlight the importance of compassion and rehabilitation. They argue that the decision to grant clemency in certain cases, particularly those involving individuals with health issues or who have served lengthy sentences, is a necessary exercise of presidential authority.
