Electrochem Ghana Limited, a McDan Group of Companies’ subsidiary, has disclosed that the recent attack and vandalism on its offices and staff, has resulted in considerable financial loss and disruption to its daily operations.
The company also says some of its staff members sustained injuries during the chaos, underscoring the urgent need for protective measures and accountability for future attacks. Electrochem Ghana Limited is a Ghanaian enterprise in Ada with three different mining leases ratified by Parliament, employing approximately 1800 permanent workers and over 3,000 casual workers during the salt mining season.
In a statement signed by Mr. Abdul Razack Adams, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, it noted that those recurring security breaches do not only endanger its personnel but also jeopardized its operational stability and ability to provide sustainable employment opportunities for Ghanaian citizens.
It added that such lawlessness undermined the investment climate in the region and threatened the trust cultivated with both local and international investors who have committed substantial resources to the company’s endeavors. “This brazen attack is not an isolated incident but part of a disturbing trend that poses a grave threat to the safety and security of employees and the integrity of the company’s operations. The assailants wreaked havoc on the company’s premises, stealing essential office supplies and a significant quantity of salt product from the warehouse.”
According to the statement, the persistent nature of the attacks creates an environment of uncertainty that could deter future investments vital to the growth of the company and the broader Ghanaian economy, noting that the safety and security of its workforce remained a paramount concern.
The statement added that management and staff were alarmed by the escalating frequency and severity of those attacks and therefore called on the relevant authorities to take immediate and decisive action to protect legitimate businesses operating in the region.
“These incidents not only threaten our operations but also risk destabilizing the local economy, which relies heavily on our mining activities,” it added. The company disclosed that its commitment to community betterment extended beyond salt production, as the company had invested in education, constructed clean water infrastructure, and launched micro-loan programmes for women entrepreneurs to foster sustainable businesses.
“We urgently implore the government to take a firm stance against this violence by directing security agencies to swiftly apprehend and prosecute those responsible for this egregious act,” it stated.
The company also appealed to the government to ensure that the perpetrators of the attack were held accountable for their actions, and their prosecution should serve as a deterrent to others who might contemplate similar acts of aggression against its operations in the future.
“We call for public condemnation of these violent acts and demand an immediate investigation into this incident. The time for action is now, as the safety of our workforce and the stability of our operations hang in the balance,” it concluded.
