A superb goalkeeping performance from Benjamin Asare helped Ghana national football team secure a hard-fought 0-0 draw against England national football team in their Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Boston.
England enjoyed the majority of possession and produced the better scoring opportunities, especially in the second half, but were unable to find a breakthrough against a well-organised Ghanaian defence and an inspired Asare.
The Black Stars goalkeeper was called into action late in the game when Bukayo Saka unleashed a low strike from outside the penalty area. Asare reacted sharply to make an important save after Saka was picked out by a headed pass from Declan Rice.
England came even closer moments later when Nico O’Reilly struck the crossbar with a header, epitomising the European side’s frustrating evening in front of goal.
Earlier, captain Harry Kane squandered a clear opportunity, sending a close-range effort over the bar. Additional attempts from Noni Madueke and Elliot Anderson were either blocked by defenders or comfortably dealt with by Asare.
Although Ghana spent much of the contest defending, they threatened sporadically on the counterattack. Prince Adu saw an effort blocked, while Antoine Semenyo was flagged offside after a promising attacking move.
Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu also contributed to Ghana’s forward play, though the Black Stars struggled to create clear scoring chances.
The game featured an intense midfield battle, with both teams committing tactical fouls to disrupt attacks and maintain defensive shape. Ghana’s Iñaki Williams received a yellow card during the second half as the Black Stars sought to contain England’s pressure.
In search of a winner, England introduced Marcus Rashford, Eberechi Eze and Morgan Rogers from the bench. Ghana also refreshed their attack with the introduction of Abdul Fatawu, Prince Adu and Kojo Peprah Oppong.
Despite sustained late pressure from England, Ghana held firm to claim a valuable point, with Asare’s heroics proving crucial in preserving the clean sheet.
